Free Writing - Taking a Creative Writing Course

So today, I started a creative writing course. Neurodivergent people typically think in black and white and I knew through my art, that I really struggle with imagination. As a child, play was difficult for me and I preferred lego building and my beloved Etch A Sketch.

This first session was a guided introduction to free writing. We were given abstract pictures, pieces of writing, even a paint colour chart, and given a set time to write about what came to mind. The aim of free writing is to keep writing something. Don’t stop. If your mind is blank, just write any words until the creative juices start to flow.

Start with descriptions. What does it look like? How does it make you feel? Maybe introduce similes and metaphors. Gradually your mind starts to wander and you may go off in a different direction.

When the allotted time was up, we were given time to look through what we had written and the opportunity to compose something more structured.

My favourite piece of work came from the word “here”. You can read my first attempt at a poem here - Time Team.
